Two men wearing dare 2b activewear, running up a step

A British summer can be unpredictable, but when we do get an appearance from the sun, it's time to make the most of it. It's important if you're planning to go for a run in the sun that you're wearing the right style of clothing and you've got the right accessories with you, to make sure you don't overheat. This guide will cover what you should wear in order to run safely in the summer.

Running In Summer: What to Wear

Running in the summer means you have to be prepared to deal with the heat, as well as the high probability of getting caught in a rain shower, or having to cope with wind.

  • Breathable Lightweight Tops
  • To ensure you feel as cool and comfortable whilst running as possible, look for running t-shirts and vests that have sweat wicking abilities. Sweat wicking means the material of the t-shirt itself will move any sweat and moisture away from your skin, helping to avoid any chaffing or rubbing on the skin.

Long sleeved t-shirts can also be a great summer running wardrobe edition, as long as they're lightweight, loose and breathable. They offer another layer of sun protection that vests don't.

  • Sports Bras
  • On a similar vein to lightweight tops, look for sports bras or underwear in general that is a lightweight material. Avoid anything that's too cotton heavy as it can creating rubbing and chaffing. Try and look for sports bras that have mesh ventilation for an extra layer of coolness.

  • Shorts or Leggings
  • Key feature again is making sure that whatever bottoms you wear, the material is sweat wicking to make sure you feel comfortable all throughout your run. 2 in 1 running shorts are perfect as they have a tight inner short which helps wick the sweat away and a looser outer short to help with ventilation. If you're looking at running leggings or tights, you do have the option of 3 quarter length to help keep you cool.

    Running Extras and Accessories

There's a fine line when it comes to running about being prepared and then being over prepared. Here's what we would say your summer running essentials would be.

  • Water Bottle
  • There's a range of different water bottles you could take with you on your run. There's hand held bottles, hydration vests, hydration bladders or even hydration packs. The majority of those options are hands free and has extra storage, so you can pack away any gels, phone, headphones etc.

  • Sunglasses
  • Make sure that the glasses you wear have adequate UV protection. Many specific running sunglasses have grip around the nose so that they're not constantly sliding down your face.

  • Sun Cream
  • Not all sun creams are made the same so it's essential that the sun cream you get protects your skin from UVA and UVB rays, whilst also having a high SPF. Look out for waterproof and windproof creams which adds extra protection and means you don't have to stop multiple times to re-apply it.

When you're running in the summer, you need to be more aware of the temperatures and the weather than you do in any other season. Make sure you have enough hydration with you, grab a running buddy and get out there and enjoy the run!
