How To Look After Your Ski Helmet

Your ski helmet is arguably the most important part of your ski wear as it protects your head and lets you enjoy the slopes in safety! Most people think that once the ski helmet comes off your head that's it, it can get thrown in a bag and forgotten about until it's needed on the next ski trip. But you do need to be careful when it comes to looking after your helmet, to make sure that it's safe for use for years to come.

So you've come off the slopes after a long day of skiing, what do you do with your helmet? The easiest thing to do would be take it off, put it down somewhere and be done with it. But what should you actually do with your helmet? Well the first thing you need to do is clean it. That's as simple as removing the inner liner and hand washing that with a mild soap or you can follow the washing instructions on the tag. Then the outer shell can be cleaned using soapy water and a soft cloth. Once you've cleaned your helmet, make sure it's all fully dried before putting it away into your protective cover. If it's not completely dry, you could end up with an uncomfortable and smelly ski helmet.

If you have good upkeep of your ski helmet, you should be able to use it anywhere from 2 to 5 ski seasons. It's advised to replace after a maximum of 5 due to the fact that the elements and the wear and tear of it all can really reduce the effectiveness.

It's also important to be aware that if you have an accident, or if your helmet gets significantly damaged/dropped whilst you're on or off the slopes, it will need replacing. The main thing that you need to look for if you have dropped your helmet but you're not sure if you've damaged it, is a fracture or crack that you can fit your finger nail in. Fractures these size (or bigger of course) mean that the integral structure of the ski helmet has been damaged and it won't be able to protect your head effectively. If you are in any doubt about your helmet after any sort of damage, it's better to be safe than sorry and replace it as soon as you can.
