Man wearing blue Dare 2b jacket surrounded by trees and nature

Autumn is known as a transitional season, bringing in darker mornings and evenings, cooler temperatures and crisper days. It's also the perfect time to plan longer hikes as you won't have the beating sun on your head, however you run the risk of getting caught in showers so it's important to dress for anything that the weather could throw at you. This guide is going to talk through how to layer for your next autumnal hike.

What To Wear Hiking in Autumn

Layer One

The first layer should be your base layer. The main role of the base layers is to help regulate your body temperature. It should fit close to the skin so that the material can wick anyway any moisture and sweat. Avoid anything that is majority cotton based as cotton retains moisture and can get heavy as the day goes on. Merino wool or anything with a thermal fabric would be more suitable.

Layer Two

The second layer could be a fleece, midlayer or even a thin softshell style jacket. It's going to be thicker than your base layer as the job of this layer is for heat and warmth, but it's also easily removable if you do get too hot whilst out hiking.

Full zip fleece are super practical for layering and temperature regulation, whereas quarter zip or pull over fleece and midlayers tend to have higher neck lines which feel cosier.

Most hiking fleece and midlayers will be made of breathable fabrics which should help reduce any risk of overheating.

Layer Three

The final layer would be your outer layer. If you know the weather is going to be dry, then a lightweight and breathable softshell jacket would be enough coverage. But you don't want to run the risk of getting caught in the rain, then you would layer up with a waterproof, hiking jacket.

When looking for a hiking jacket, there are a few key features you should be looking out for: waterproofing, breathability, full sized hoods, and taped seams. These jacket features will help to make sure that you're dry, warm and comfortable throughout the whole hike.

Once you've correctly layered up your top half, it's important you don't forget about wearing correct hiking trousers, shoes and socks. Walking trousers are made using fabrics that have higher levels of breathability, water resistance and wind resistance. Making them a better choice to wear when you're out in the elements. Avoid wearing fabrics like jeans or anything denim, as this material retains water, gets really heavy and isn't able to dry off quickly.

If you're looking for some high tech hiking trousers, look for features that include articulated knee designs which will help with unrestricted movement, multiple zipped pockets, four way stretch fabric and UV protection.

Walking shoes are an absolute essential when it comes to a hike. They have a high level of water resistance and can provide extra support around your ankles, whilst you're exploring uneven terrain. Hiking boots have it in the name, they are made specifically for being out exploring the outdoors.

Hiking in Autumn

The most important thing when it comes to hiking in Autumn, is making sure you're layering up in the right way. You want a base layer that is sweat wicking and can help regulate your temperature. Then a midlayer that is for warmth and comfort, but something that is also easily adjustable if you do get too hot. And finally, an outer layer that's sole purpose is to keep your dry and protect you from the elements. Avoid materials like cotton and denim that will get heavy if wet, and make sure you're wearing the appropriate shoes!
