A Beginners Cycling Checklist
Thinking about starting cycling but don't know where to start?
Cycling is a fantastic way to stay healthy whilst exploring the outdoors. If you're a beginner rider, it's important to have a cycling checklist that helps to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable ride. That's why we wanted to create a checklist that goes through everything you need to know, pre, during and post ride.
A Beginners Cycling Checklist - Pre Ride
Before you hit the road, it's crucial to take some time to prepare your bike and gear.
- Always check your bike for any damage or any visible signs of wear and tear.
- Make sure that the brakes are in a good condition and that the wheels are inflated correctly.
- Adjust your seat height, your saddle should be at a height that allows you to pedal comfortably without feeling like you're putting too much strain on your joints.
- Wear appropriate clothing. Choose cycling clothing that is comfortable, but be prepared for any weather conditions, we all know what the Great British weather is like.
- Linking to the above point, always wear a helmet!
- And finally, it could be worth carrying some essential gear on the ride with you. Things like a spare tyre inner tube and levers, a mini-pump, or even a multi-tool. They can come in handy if you have any issues whilst you're out on your bike.
-
Now that you're ready for your ride, there's also some guidelines that you need to remember when you're on the streets.
- Follow the rules of the road, including traffic signals, signs, and lane markings.
- Be aware of any potential hazards: potholes, traffic, pedestrians and more.
- If you feel tired or dizzy, always make sure to take a break, rest and rehydrate yourself. Cycling should be fun, don't push yourself too hard.
Beginners Cycling Checklist - Post Ride
Once you've finished, make sure you take some time to care for your bike to make sure that it's in good condition for your next ride.
- Clean your bike using a damp cloth or sponge, and make sure to take extra care on the wheels and chain.
- Check for damage or for any signs of wear and tear, such as loose bolts or damaged cables.
- Lubricate your chain by applying a small amount of chain lube to your chain and working it in. This will help keep the chain (and bike) running smoothly.
- Store your bike in a secure location, away from the elements, any direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
- Hopefully this checklist has given you a good starting place when it comes to getting prepared for your first ride.
